This policy explains what personal information Horizon Bee Africa collects when you use horizonbeeafrica.com, including ForYOU NEWS and our online shop, how we use it, and the choices and rights you have. We handle personal information in line with Kenya's Data Protection Act, 2019.

1. Who we are

Horizon Bee Africa ("we", "us") is an apiculture company based along Outspan Hospital, Kamakwa, Nyeri, Kenya. We are the data controller for the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us at horizonbeehub@gmail.com or +254 798 438 150.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

Your account

Your name, email address and password when you register, and any profile photo or details you add in Settings. Passwords are stored by our login provider in encrypted form; we never see them.

Your activity on ForYOU NEWS

Comments and replies you post, articles you like or save, and the articles you have read, so we can show your saved list, reading history and notifications.

Writers

If you write for ForYOU NEWS, the articles, images and author details you submit.

Enquiries and forms

Your name, email, phone number and message when you use a contact, training, investment or partnership form.

Newsletter

Your email address when you subscribe.

Shop orders

When you order through WhatsApp or by phone: your name, phone number, delivery location and the products you order. M-Pesa payments are processed by Safaricom; we receive the payment confirmation, not your M-Pesa PIN or account details.

Training and events

If you register for a training or event, the details you give on the registration form.

Information collected automatically

Usage information

We use Google Analytics to understand how the website is used: pages visited, time on page, the device and browser you use, and your approximate location (city or country). It does not tell us who you are.

Sign-in information

When you sign in, your browser keeps a sign-in token so you stay signed in between pages. See Cookies and browser storage.

3. How we use your information

• To create and run your account, and keep you signed in.
• To show your comments, likes, saved articles and reading history.
• To send notifications about new articles, replies and upcoming training and events.
• To reply to your enquiries and process your shop orders and deliveries.
• To give registered members event details and joining links.
• To send our newsletter, if you subscribed.
• To keep the website secure, prevent abuse and moderate comments.
• To understand how the website is used and improve it.
• To meet our legal and accounting obligations.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.

4. Our legal basis

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 we rely on:

• Your consent, for the newsletter and optional analytics. You can withdraw it at any time.
• A contract with you, to provide your account, process orders and give access to events you register for.
• Our legitimate interests, to keep the website secure, answer enquiries and improve our services, where these are not outweighed by your rights.
• Legal obligations, such as keeping business and tax records.

5. Who we share it with

We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the website and our business, and only as much as they need:

Supabase

Hosts our database and login system (accounts, comments, likes, saved articles, notifications, events, enquiry forms and the newsletter list).

Google

Google Analytics for website statistics, and Google Forms when an event's registration form is hosted there.

WhatsApp (Meta)

When you contact us or order through WhatsApp.

Safaricom (M-Pesa)

To receive payments for shop orders.

Meeting services

Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams, when you join an online training or event.

Email service

A provider that sends our newsletter and account emails on our behalf.

Delivery partners

Your name, phone number and delivery location, to deliver your order.

We may also disclose information where the law requires it, or to protect the rights and safety of our users, the public or Horizon Bee Africa.

Your public profile name and photo appear next to comments you post on ForYOU NEWS. Comments are visible to everyone who reads the article.

6. Storage outside Kenya

Some of our service providers, including Supabase and Google, store data on servers outside Kenya. When this happens we rely on providers that apply appropriate safeguards to protect personal information, as required by the Data Protection Act, 2019.

7. Cookies and browser storage

Essential

Your browser stores a sign-in token and a few settings (for example, that you have visited before and which notifications you have opened). The website needs these to work and they are not used for advertising.

Analytics

Google Analytics cookies help us count visits and see which pages are useful. You can block them in your browser settings or with the Google Analytics opt-out add-on.

We do not use advertising cookies.

8. How long we keep it

• Accounts: while your account is open. When you ask us to delete it, we remove your account and personal details within 30 days.
• Comments: until you or we remove them, or your account is deleted.
• Notifications: shown for 10 days and removed from our database after about 30 days.
• Enquiries: up to 2 years after our last contact with you.
• Orders and payment records: as long as Kenyan tax and accounting law requires.
• Newsletter: until you unsubscribe.

9. Security

We protect personal information with encrypted connections (HTTPS), access rules that let each user see only their own private data, restricted administrator access, and encrypted password storage. No system is completely secure. If a data breach is likely to put your rights at risk, we will inform you and the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner as the law requires.

10. Your rights

Under the Data Protection Act, 2019 you have the right to:

• be told how your personal information is used;
• access the personal information we hold about you;
• have inaccurate or incomplete information corrected;
• have false or misleading information, or information we no longer need, deleted;
• object to our use of your information, including for newsletters;
• withdraw your consent at any time;
• receive your information in a common, machine-readable format.

You can update most of your details yourself in Account settings. For anything else, email horizonbeehub@gmail.com. We may ask you to confirm your identity, and we will reply within 7 days. We do not charge for reasonable requests.

If you are not satisfied with our response, you can complain to the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner.

11. Children

Our website and services are intended for people aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our website and services change. The date at the top shows when it was last updated. If we make significant changes, we will tell registered users by email or with a notice on the website.
